Epson 730HD LCD Projector - Repairs & Modifications

Damaged LCD Panel Replacement

Excessive heat caused the blue LCD panel to become damaged. At first, a replacement was not easy to source. I also learned from research that proper alignment of the panel would be nearly impossible without specialized tools.

Eventually, I did install the new panel and I was pleased even though there were minor image alignment issues.

Wide-Angle Lens Modification - Mk1

I used a wide-angle converter lens to adjust the projector’s throw distance.

I sketched a few designs and spent too much time at hardware stores looking over parts.
I had to consider the overall cost, part size, weight, ease of construction, and most importantly adjustability.

The build needed a height and tilt adjustment and had to work with any projector model.
The first issue was holding the lens.
At first, I used a heavy hinged pipe holder. It was adequate but difficult to mount, so I used more expensive gas pipe clamps.
Getting the tilt adjustment was also an issue. After buying parts, cutting, drilling, and grinding, I finally put together something compact that worked.

I used a threaded bar for the height adjustment. By turning the long hex nuts the lens could raise or lower.

Wide-Angle Lens Modification - Mk2

After a year I revisited my wide-angle less modification. The wooden stand worked but it was cumbersome to carry and inconvenient to adjust.

I created a template and cut out a metal plate to hold the lens. After a lot of testing and grinding, I completed a rough metal mount that is bolted to the bottom of the projector. I had tested several hardware configurations and iterations and finally completed a design where not only the height, tilt but also lateral movements could be adjusted.

Lenovo Laptop Screen Replacement

An acquaintance asked me to troubleshoot issues with the image on the LCD on his laptop. The screen, at times, would look frozen and then slowly turn completely white.
I first sourced a replacement video cable as only the video cable might have been damaged. Unfortunately, the entire LCD needed to be replaced. I sourced a new LCD and replaced the failing one. The laptop worked as expected after the repair.

Acer Laptop Power Switch Replacement

A friend asked if I could troubleshoot his laptop. The computer would be in an ON/OFF loop after being first powered on.

I first checked the AC adapter, power port, and motherboard for faults and damage. I then wanted to checked if the issue was software-based.

By attempting to keep the laptop on by shorting the ON button, I discovered that the momentary power switch on the power-on board had failed. I verified the continuity with a multimeter.

The computer worked as expected once powered on and the switch removed. A used power button board was sourced and the faulty one replaced.

Sony Xperia Battery Replacement

The phone suffered from performance issues and then would fail to power on.

Since I already intended to replace this handset (as it would not receive any more security or OS updates), I attempted to replace the battery myself.

Although I had worked on different models before, this kind of repair with a sealed phone was a first for me.

The phone worked perfectly after the repair.
I used it for several more months before getting a new model.
